Purchasing a Reefer Trailer Unit

The modern manufacturing sector in the United States is truly enormous, as is the food industry, but they do not operate alone. Factories, warehouses, and retailers all need vehicles to transport these goods all over the nation, and this is where semi trucks, trains, jets, and even ships come in. Jets can make fast overnight deliveries over any terrain, and ships can bring many tons of cargo to domestic and foreign ports anywhere. In many cases, though, shipping is best done with a semi truck, and most of the small carrier companies in operation today have a fleet of truck rather than a jet or a train. These hardworking truck fleets make use of generic and specialized cargo trailers alike, and this includes reefer trailers. What is a reefer trailer, anyway, and what should a carrier company owner look for when they search for new reefer trailers for sale? New reefer trailer costs will vary, but a new unit is in perfect shape, while gently used reefer trailers might be bought for a serious discount. Finding new reefer trailers for sale is made easier when truck lender companies enter the picture, too.

On Reefers

A reefer truck trailer is one that has one or more refrigeration and air cooler units built into it to maintain a low temperature on the inside. Such trailers may also have insulated walls to keep outside warmth out, and a reefer’s interior may range from 70 degrees to -20 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on the cargo’s needs. Such a trailer may range from 28 to 53 feet long, and the largest may be up to 13.5 feet tall and weigh as much as 44,000 pounds. The market for reefer trailers is robust and still growing, and some 500,000 of them are in operation across the United States alone. Around the world, the refrigerated trailer market is expected to reach a market value of %7.65 billion by the year 2022, and it may grow at a CAGR of 4.8% from 2016 to 2022 or so.

These reefer trailers are often making deliveries to and from grocery stores, as they can carry cold-sensitive items ranging from meat to dairy and frozen processed foods, and the like. Often, these reefer trucks will arrive at a warehouse that has cold goods stored in a freezer on site, and they’ll be transferred to the truck. Once that reefer arrives at a grocery store, dock crews will unload those goods and place them into freezers and fridge space on the store’s premises. Dry goods may be delivered in ordinary trucks instead.

Finding New Reefer Trailers For Sale

A truck carrier company’s owner may decide that the time has come to purchase a new reefer trailers for sale, and thus expand their delivery options to grocery stores. When looking for new reefer trailers for sale, the buyer may find higher prices, but these new units may have factory warranties, and they are in perfect condition. Meanwhile, gently used trailers need to be inspected for any faulty hardware or wear and tear, but they might be bought for a discounted price. The buyer might even test the air cooler units to check that the reefer can create and maintain the desired temperatures inside.

Big banks are reluctant to make loans to truck companies or other small businesses, but specialized truck lenders may be much more cooperative. These lenders will look over a borrower’s business credit score and personal credit score, and check for red flags such as a history of delinquent loan payments or filing for bankruptcy. The borrower may get a percentage of the trailer’s value as a loan, and with very good credit scores, they might get as much as 100% of the trailer’s value in a loan and at a low interest rate. A poor credit score might not prevent a loan from being made, but that loan might have a high interest rate. The truck itself may act as collateral to make the loan even more attractive to the lender. Also, the borrower may use an existing truck or trailer as collateral for a loan, based on a percentage of the truck’s value. The borrower will want details such as the truck’s age and photos of its current condition.
